Also, level the mount as best you can. If the mount isn’t level, then there is a third error that cannot be corrected by any of the polar alignment techniques. 1. Next, synchronize your telescope’s mount to the sky using at least 2 stars. 2. Slew to, center and synch on a star. 3. If possible, slew to Polaris. If not possible, use any bright star on the same side of the meridian as the star you synched to. The slew should put the star close, but probably not right into the field of view of the eyepiece.

This is illustrated in Fig. 1 with two images of Jupiter. Here the conditions changed dramatically between the two observing sessions and this is reflected in the detail that can be seen in the images. Collimation refers to the alignment of the optics. The importance of a well collimated telescope cannot be understated. Schmidt-Cassagrains and Newtonian reflectors need to be as accurately collimated as possible for high resolution imaging. Just a slight misalignment of the mirrors can degrade the detail in the image substantially.

By having multiple lenses each with a different shape and/ or optical refractive index (called “N”, the refractive index is the ratio of the speed of light in a vacuum divided by the speed of light in a medium, in this case the lens) the light of each wavelength is bent (refracted) differently and the different wavelengths can be brought to the same focal point. In an achromatic telescope, the lens system focuses the red and blue wavelengths to the same point, but not the green. When used visually, this isn’t generally a problem since the eye is more sensitive to green light.
