Part I: Planning Lotus Notes Applications The chapters in this section are devoted to topics that need to be considered before beginning development of an application. Chapter 1 begins with an introduction to Lotus Notes, followed by a discussion of how Notes can be used to solve business problems.

Contrast this with a typical applications development system such as FoxPro, Oracle, or Sybase, where each application is developed independently and has its own interface built from the ground up. Each time a new application is introduced to the user, he or she must be trained in the interface as well as the application itself. Each time a user wants to switch applications, he or she has to launch a new executable file. In Notes, the user simply double-clicks a different icon on the Notes workspace.

My desktop has about 12 tabbed workspace pages, some of which have dozens of databases on them. At the office, my desktop literally represents about 1GB of database applications! That alone is impressive. After a user understands the Notes interface, learning new applications is very simple. A user doesn't have to learn Notes all over again, just the new application. The reduction in training costs alone can, over time, pay for the initial expense of Notes. Contrast this with a typical applications development system such as FoxPro, Oracle, or Sybase, where each application is developed independently and has its own interface built from the ground up.
