Heller was well aware many manufacturers kept their pressure angles low, because the normal forces between meshing gear teeth are minimal at low pressure angles. Higher angles were thought to increase friction, resulting in more heat, wear and reduced efficiency. In apparent contradiction, gear teeth Hertzian pressures decrease with higher pressure angles.
When the worm drives the worm wheel, the area above the pitch line is in recess action and the area below is in approach action. Approach is a sliding action by the wheel tooth down the side of the worm tooth towards the central axis of the worm, literally wearing away the tooth surface. The recess action is a sliding out away from the central axis, a direction that aids rotation. An exception is when the wheel and worm both can become the driver. In this situation where the two actions have to be evenly divided, recess action is in the direction of motion, conversely the approach action is against the motion of the friction component adding to the load.
Worm gears are classified in the various gear standards by the manufacturing method used to produce the worm. Chapter one discusses the fact that early worm gearing design fell into three distinct different categories: the non-throated, one-element-throated (usually described as cylindrical or parallel), and the double-throated with both elements throated. The latter is now internationally known as globoidal, and all are shown in Fig. 2. Today, two of these three original forms have been developed into practical commercial usage, each with its own advantages.
